Championship Festival FAQ |
What is the Celtel Africa Challenge Championship Festival?
The festival is the final tournament of the Celtel Africa Challenge year. Sixteen student teams from Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia will attend. This year, it will be held 18 to 24 January, 2008, at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
Im 2006-2007, 16 teams competed in a knockout series of 15 games which will be taped for later broadcast throughout the region.
Each Celtel Africa Challenge team is composed of three players plus a fourth alternate who represent their university in the competition and is accompanied by a faculty or staff coach.
Teams compete for institutional grants for their universities and educational grants for themselves. The further the team progresses in the tournament, the larger the grants they receive.
The Celtel Africa Challenge Championship Festival is a live event. The games are its centerpiece, but it also features welcoming activities, social and cultural events, guest speakers, celebrity performances and a gala championship awards banquet.
In addition to the teams, attendees include university officials, government and civic leaders and volunteers representing Celtel and the community at large who assist in the competition and other events.
