Qualifying Tournaments FAQ


Which universities may compete?

All chartered and accredited universities in Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia are eligible to participate in Celtel Africa Challenge. Eligible universities must complete the online enrollment form.  The deadline for universities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda is 12 October.  The deadline for universities in Malawi and Zambia is 26 October.

How are the university teams selected?

The competition begins at the universities in October, 2007.  Each university conducts Student Tryout Tests.  From those tests, 12-20 students will be selected to be members of the Celtel Africa Challenge Scholars Club.  Club members will meet and practice together for 1-2 weeks.  The coach will then select the university's Celtel Africa Challenge Scholars Team.

The deadline in for CAC Scholars Team selection and Qualifying Tournament Registration at universities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda is 26 October.  The deadline for universities in Malawi and Zambia is 22 November.  Team members are limited to one year of participation and must meet player eligibility requirements.

Double knockout tournaments wherein each team competes until they have lost two matches.  The top four teams this tournament will advance to the International Festival & Championship in January.

Double knockout tournaments wherein each team competes until they have lost two matches.  The top four teams this tournament will advance to the International Festival & Championship in January.
Uganda 1 November
Site to be determined in Kampala
Double knockout tournaments wherein each team competes until they have lost two matches.  The top four teams this tournament will advance to the International Festival & Championship in January.
Malawi

To be determined
(projected for late November in Lilongwe)

Best two-out-of-three series between the two eligible university teams.  Both teams will advance to the International Festival & Championship in January.
Zambia To be determined
(projected for late November in Lusaka)
The format for the competition in Zambia will be determined following the university enrollment. It is anticipated that it will be a double knockout tournament.  The top two teams will advance to the International Festival & Championship in January.
 
 


What expenses are covered?

Most university teams will travel to their Qualifying Tournament by vehicle.  In such case, the university will be reimbursed for the pre-approved cost of the transport and meals en-route.  Where travel distances require a team to travel by airplane, Celtel Africa Challenge (CAC) will purchase the airline tickets.  CAC will provide hotel rooms for teams which must stay overnight in the Qualifying Tournament city.  A Travel Expense Policy Document will be supplied to the CAC Liaison and Coach.  Travel per diems are not paid; however meals during the day of the Qualifying Tournament will be furnished.

What are the prizes?

Participants at the Qualifying Tournaments receive t-shirts and certificates of completion.  Only the 16 universities attending the International Festival & Championship along with their four players, the Coach and the Liaison will receive grants from Celtel.
