Qualifying Tournaments

In-country Qualifying Tournaments will be held in Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia:

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda 1 November Double knockout tournaments wherein each team competes until they have lost two matches.  The top four teams from each of those three tournaments will advance to the International Festival & Competition in January.

Best two-out-of-three series between the two eligible university teams.  Both teams will advance to the International Festival & Competition in January.
Zambia To be determined
(projected for late November)
The format for the competition in Zambia will be determined following the university enrollment. It is anticipated that it will be a double knockout tournament.  The top two teams will advance to the International Festival & Competition in January.


Enrolled universities must conduct Student Tryout Tests, open to all students.

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda: Available testing dates are 15, 16 ,17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24 and 25 October.  After the tests are administered and scored, the top students will practice the game and the Coach will select the university's Celtel Africa Challenge Scholars Team.  Once the team is selected, the Liaison or Coach must complete the Qualifying Tournament Registration form. The deadline for this is 26 October.

Malawi and Zambia: Available testing dates are 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15 November.  After the tests are administered and scored, the top students will practice the game and the Coach will select the university's Celtel Africa Challenge Scholars Team.  Once the team is selected, the Liaison or Coach must complete the Qualifying Tournament Registration form. The deadline for this is 23 November.

Celtel Africa Challenge (CAC) will pay for or reimburse each university for its cost to attend the Qualifying Tournament.  A Travel Expense Policy Document will be supplied to the CAC Liaison and Coach.  Hotel rooms and any airline tickets, where required, will be paid directly by CAC.  University teams which travel by vehicle will be reimbursed for the pre-approved cost of the transport and meals en-route.  Travel per diems are not paid; however meals during the day of the Qualifying Tournament will be furnished.
